India set to present best breakout team for Paris 2024 Olympics, says AIDSF General Secy

The All India DanceSport Federation (AIDSF) has stepped up preparations to send a competitive team to the Paris 2024 Olympics which will witness break dance for the first time as a medal-winning event.

Speaking to OTV, AIDSF General Secretary Biswajit Mohanty said the governing body, responsible for the development of the sport, is working tirelessly to organize workshops, selection events and even hire international coaches to train a privileged few in preparation for Paris 2024. The governing body is trying to involve more Odisha players, he said.

“We will promote the event via social media and hold various workshops in selected states and select dancers for the break across the country,” Mohanty said.

The International Olympic Committee is organizing the urban events with the aim of attracting a younger audience to the program of the medal-winning events of the Paris 2024 Games. This will be the first DanceSport event to appear at the Olympic Games, having been organized at the Olympic Games in Youth in Buenos Aires two years ago.

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also announced that skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will also feature in the Paris edition after their debut at the Tokyo Games is postponed to 2021.

Breakdancing will be called “Breaking” in the Olympics, as in the 1970s by hip-hop pioneers in the United States.
While its inclusion in the Olympic program has raised eyebrows among sports purists, B-boys and B-girls in India believe Breaking is the perfect blend of art and athleticism.
